Food Pantry Left Hungry for Summer
Apr 29, 2008

Most everyone, child or adult, wants summer to come- especially after the winter Central Illinois has experienced.  Summer can pretty much be a positive thing for everyone- everyone, except food pantries, that is.  Summer months can mean a drop in supply because of a greater demand.

Monticello residents will get their opportunity to help the cause with two local food drives to benefit local food pantries.  On May 2nd, the City of Monticello is hosting another community-wide food drive.  Residents are invited and encouraged to donate their non-perishable food items and toiletries, and place curbside in plastic grocery bags.  City of Monticello City staff and Councilmen will be picking up donations Friday, between 1:00pm and 3:00pm.  Lincoln School and Kairos Preschools have already committed to helping out with this event!

The National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the United States Postal Service, will also be holding their annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive.  Donations of non-perishable food items like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, vegetables, cereal and rice will be accepted on Saturday, May 10th to help families in the community.  Residents are asked to place their food donation at their mailbox on May 10th before their letter carrier arrives.  Donations will be picked up and taken to the post office, where they will be distributed to the local food banks or pantries.  No glass items, please.  This event is the largest one-day food drive in the nation!

The Piatt County Food Pantry experiences supply lows typically during the summer and winter holiday seasons.  Reasons for this include schools not being in session, therefore children not participating in the offered lunch programs.  Residents with seasonal employment also effect the food pantry supply.
